WHAT CAN I EXPECT? A genetic counselor will first explain the testing options and process to you. Genetic testing is optional and you do not have to proceed with testing if you decide it is not right for you.
WHAT GENETIC CONDITIONS ARE TESTED? There are many different laboratories and gene panels that may be used for testing depending on your specific needs. Each panel includes testing for conditions that occur with high frequency in certain populations including testing for cystic fibrosis, Fragile X syndrome, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Tay Sachs disease and other conditions common among people of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. Some panels include screening for hundreds of additional conditions such as the Natera Horizon 421 and Fulgent Beacon 427 panels.
